Fire Inspections
The Sheboygan Fire
Department conducts annual fire safety inspections of
commercial and general assembly occupancies.
Inspections are performed by engine companies (made up
of a Fire Department Captain or Lieutenant, a fire
truck operator and one or more firefighters) and the
department's Chief Fire Inspector. Occupancies
inspected include restaurants, factories, mercantile,
public buildings and 3 family or larger apartment
buildings.
Possible exits and the
paths taken to reach them, fire extinguishers,
electrical systems, emergency lighting, sprinkler
systems and fire alarm systems are just some of the
items examined. Violations are noted, and a time frame
is given to the owner or occupant to make the required
corrections before a re-inspection is conducted.
The Chief Fire Inspector
works closely with the City's Planning and Building
departments to review plans for new construction and
remodeling projects. Issues such as Fire Department
access, water supply, exits, alarm systems, emergency
lighting, suppression systems, hazardous materials and
fire safe construction are evaluated.

Fire Prevention
Education
The
Fire Prevention Bureau coordinates a comprehensive
public education program
(curriculum)
to all local schools. During several months in the fall
of the year, firefighters provide directed education
programs to students K-1st, 3rd and 4th grades.
These program begins with meeting a firefighter in
Kindergarten and culminates with the Survive Alive
Program in Fourth Grade. The department also instituted
a Fire Academy Training Program which brings together
students from area schools to a one-day educational
event held at Station #3.

Fire Investigations
Our community experiences residential, commercial and
industrial fires. These fires are thoroughly
investigated to find their origin and cause. When safety related issues arise from these
investigations, the Fire Prevention Bureau, in
cooperation with area media, educate the public to
reduce future occurrences.
